AI Education for SMB Teams

Your team is using AI. They probably should not be using it the way they are.

Most SMBs let AI adoption happen by accident: employees discovering ChatGPT, pasting client data into public models, generating outputs nobody verifies. The result is uneven productivity, inconsistent quality, and quiet exposure to data and compliance risks. Steelhead's education engagements replace accidental AI use with operationally-grounded training built around your actual workflows.

Your team has already started using AI. They have not been taught how to use it well.

95% of SMB decision-makers report needing more training to use AI effectively, and that gap shows up everywhere: inconsistent outputs across the team, sensitive client data leaking into public models, employees reinventing prompts because nobody documented what works. The capability is in the building. The discipline is not.

Most SMBs have no written AI policy, no acceptable use guidelines, no approved tool list. Risk accumulates silently until something goes wrong: a contract disclosure pasted into a free chatbot, a hallucinated number making it into a client report, a regulator asking how AI was used in a process. The governance gap is invisible right up to the moment it is not.

You bought Copilot or Claude Enterprise licenses and adoption is hovering at 10%. The team uses it to rewrite emails. The capability your software vendor promised is not the capability your business is realizing. Pilot purgatory is a procurement problem dressed up as a technology problem; the licenses are not the bottleneck, the operational integration is.

Generic AI courses teach generic AI. They do not know your tools, your workflows, your clients, or your compliance obligations. Your team finishes the course, watches a demo of someone else's prompt library, and still does not know what to do on Monday morning when an actual client request comes in. Off-the-shelf training produces off-the-shelf outcomes.

Every engagement starts with understanding your business, not handing you a slide deck.

Most providers come with a curriculum looking for an audience. Steelhead comes with a discovery process and builds the curriculum from what it finds. The line: we don't teach AI; we teach your team how to use AI on the work they actually do. Steelhead delivers AI training in Calgary, across Alberta, and remotely for SMB teams across Canada.

Stakeholder interviews

We talk to leadership, department heads, and the people doing the actual work. We map current AI use, current frustrations, and current workflows. We see where AI is already being used unofficially, and where the team thinks it should be.

Software and workflow audit

We document the tools your team uses daily, the data flows between them, and where AI can plug in without breaking what works. We identify the workflows where AI saves the most time and the ones where it would create more risk than value.

Custom curriculum design

Based on the discovery, we build a training program tuned to your team. The prompts, examples, and exercises use your actual operational context. Nothing is theoretical. Your accountants don't sit through a demo of a marketer's workflow.

Delivery and reinforcement

We deliver the training in the format that fits your team: executive briefing, workshop, or multi-session program. We provide the curriculum, prompt library, and policy templates as written deliverables your team can reference after the engagement ends.

How much does custom AI training for SMB teams cost?

Educational engagements are sized to match the depth of work involved. The right tier depends on who's in the room, how much customization the curriculum requires, and what the team needs to walk away with.

Tier 1

Executive Briefing

60 to 90 minutes

A concentrated session for leadership teams. Strategic framing, capability assessment, governance fundamentals, and a discussion of where AI fits in your specific operations. Ends with a discovery conversation about the highest-value opportunities for your business.

Best for: leadership teams who need orientation before authorizing broader initiatives. Often booked before any team-wide training.

From $2,500

After CAPG rebate (Alberta SMBs): as low as $1,250

Final pricing depends on team size, discovery scope, and customization required.

Tier 2

Half-Day Team Workshop

3 to 4 hours

A workshop tuned to a specific team or department, built around their actual workflows. Includes pre-workshop discovery, custom curriculum design, and hands-on exercises using prompts and tools selected for their work. Each attendee leaves with a personalized prompt library and workflow guide. Every engagement concludes with an AI Opportunity Map, a written diagnostic identifying the highest-value automation opportunities surfaced during discovery.

Best for: teams of 5 to 25 who use AI tools daily and need structured operational training to use them well.

From $7,500

After CAPG rebate (Alberta SMBs): as low as $3,750

Final pricing depends on team size, discovery scope, and customization required.

Tier 3

Custom Multi-Session Curriculum

4 to 8 weeks

A multi-week program for organizations rolling out AI broadly across multiple teams or roles. Includes deep operational discovery, role-segmented curriculum, multiple delivery sessions, written deliverables (acceptable use policy, prompt library, workflow templates), and dedicated office hours for follow-up questions. Includes an AI Opportunity Map identifying automation opportunities surfaced during the deep operational discovery, which doubles as a roadmap for follow-on initiatives.

Best for: organizations with 25+ employees implementing AI as a strategic initiative, especially in regulated industries where governance documentation is required.

From $20,000

After CAPG rebate (Alberta SMBs): as low as $10,000

Final pricing depends on team size, discovery scope, and customization required.

For Alberta Businesses

Does the CAPG grant cover AI training in Alberta?

The Canada-Alberta Productivity Grant (CAPG) reimburses Alberta employers for 50% of eligible training costs for existing employees, up to $5,000 per trainee per year. For newly hired Albertans, the rebate goes up to 75%.

Recent program updates removed the minimum-hours requirement and the formal-certification requirement, which means short-format training, including half-day workshops, now qualifies. This effectively cuts your out-of-pocket cost in half on every Steelhead engagement.

Steelhead provides a CAPG application guide and supporting documentation as part of every Alberta engagement. We handle the paperwork your accountant needs to file the rebate.

Industry research shows SMBs typically allocate 20% of their AI implementation budget to training and change management. That budget exists separately from custom build budgets, which means education engagements rarely require new budget approval; they deploy spend already allocated.

What does an AI training curriculum cover?

The curriculum is built from your discovery, but every engagement covers the same foundational areas, adapted to your specific tools, workflows, and risk profile.

AI fundamentals

What LLMs are and are not. Why they hallucinate and how to mitigate it. Where they fit in business workflows and where they should not be used.

Prompt engineering

Structuring requests for reliable outputs. Iterating on prompts. Building reusable prompt libraries for repeated workflows so the team is not reinventing the same prompt every Tuesday.

Context and grounding

Giving the model the right reference material. Avoiding the "blank prompt" failure mode. When to use RAG, files, or embedded context.

Workflow integration

How AI plugs into your existing tools. MCP connections. Agent workflows. Building automations your team can actually maintain after the consultant leaves.

AI governance and policy

Acceptable use policies. Data classification. Approved tools. The documentation your compliance team or auditor will ask for, written before they ask.

Output verification

Reviewing AI outputs critically. Building human-in-the-loop checkpoints. When to trust the model and when to verify, and how to teach a team to tell the difference.

How does AI education connect to a custom AI build?

Education engagements often surface automation opportunities the workshop itself cannot solve. The discovery work that happens during a workshop overlaps significantly with the discovery work needed to scope a custom AI build, which means a workshop client who later commissions a build starts the build engagement with most of the operational mapping already done.

For organizations who are clearly ready for a custom build from the start, Steelhead's primary service line is custom AI systems. Education is the right entry point when the team needs orientation before broader rollout, when the goal is uplift across many people rather than one workflow, or when governance and policy are the immediate priority.

Common questions.

Do you teach generic AI courses or workshops?

No. Every engagement starts with operational discovery and produces a curriculum specific to your business. We do not deliver canned content.

How long does a typical engagement take from first call to delivery?

Executive briefings take 1 to 2 weeks from booking to delivery. Half-day workshops take 3 to 4 weeks because of the discovery and custom curriculum design phases. Custom multi-session programs run 4 to 8 weeks of delivery after a 2 to 3 week discovery and design phase.

Can you customize for our specific industry?

Yes. We have particular depth in staffing agencies, insurance brokerages, and digital marketing agencies. We also work with adjacent SMB verticals where the operational pain pattern is similar. Every engagement adapts to your industry's tools, terminology, and compliance context.

Will the training be virtual or in-person?

Either, depending on what fits your team. Half-day workshops and multi-session programs work well in both formats. Executive briefings are usually virtual unless you are Calgary-based.

What happens after the training ends?

You keep the curriculum, prompt libraries, and any policy templates we produced. Custom multi-session programs include dedicated office hours after delivery. Workshop and briefing engagements can be extended with follow-up sessions or a transition into a custom build engagement.

Do you provide certificates or formal accreditation?

Steelhead's training is professional development, not academic certification. We provide written deliverables (curriculum, prompt library, policy templates) that document the engagement for your records, but we do not currently grant continuing education credits or formal certification.
